Plug-in

The plug in sat nav system is probably the most well-known type of sat nav and the most widely used in the country.

Plug in sat navs are generally more expensive than the hand held versions, but they are worth the extra money.

They usually sit on the dash board and are plugged into the car. You simply type in your destination and your starting point and you will be told exactly where to go.

Integrated

Integrated sat navs actually come with the vast majority of newer cars these days. These are systems that are built into the car itself.

Usually they will be below the stereo in the car. Integrated sat navs typically look like a large screen, and a lot of them are touch screens.

These types of sat navs are often considered the best. This is probably because they are safer as you don’t need to be distracted by handheld devices and they are very easy to control.

If you have a new car that has only recently been made then you probably have an integrated sat nav. If you don’t have one then there are a lot of places that will actually install an integrated sat nav for you.

PDA/Mobile Apps

A lot of the newer phones and mobile devices such as the iPhone and the Blackberry actually have the capability to be used as a sat nav system.

There are a lot of different sat nav apps that can be downloaded for this purpose.

One benefit of using a PDA or mobile device as a sat nav system is that it is very convenient if you get lost and need directions.

Hand-Held

These devices work much the same as the PDA and mobile device, and there is still the issue of not being able to hold the device whilst driving.

However, they can be very useful to have in the car if you know that you are going to be making a long distance journey and you don’t have any other sat nav systems available.

Another good thing about hand held sat navs is that they are relatively cheap.

As you can see, there are several different types of sat navs, but if you are making a long distance journey then it is definitely a good idea to have one just in case.
