What are Chromebooks?

Chromebooks are a type of laptop / mobile device running Google Chrome OS.

Chromebooks are unique amongst laptop devices in that they do not run Windows or offer a standard PC like environment.

Types of Chromebooks

The two first devices are to be manufactured by Samsung and Acer and are due to be released on June 15th 2011.

Both are reported to be similar to the Cr-48 prototype.

Samsung Chromebook

The Samsung Chromebook is compact and lightweight (1.5kg).

Specs include a snappy 1.66GHz dual-core Intel Atom N570 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 16GB solid state drive (SSD). This means it is a relatively fast computer compared to tablet PCs.

It has a slightly larger 12.1″ screen compared to the Acer Chromebook. PC Advisor report that images looks “really good” and that “colours were vibrant and accurately rendered.”

Acer Chromebook

The Acer Chromebook has an Intel Atom N570 processor, 2gb of RAM, 16GB SSD, 2 USB ports, a 4-in-1 memory card reader and webcam.

Although the Acer has a ever so slightly smaller screen, it has a good quality 11.6″ HD Widescreen CineCrystalTM LED-backlit LCD.

The Acer comes with a HDMI output.
