Types of Travel Insurance

When booking a holiday or long weekend away, there are many things to think about and more often than not, ensuring you have the correct type of travel insurance is usually far from the front of your mind and can sometimes be a late afterthought.

Beach - Photo by Drew And Merissa

Just like choosing any type of insurance cover, whether it is home, car etc. travel insurance can sometimes be a time consuming task as you need to make sure you are covered for any activity or eventuality that might occur during your time away.

Nowadays, this drawn out affair has been made easier with many insurance providers setting out a clear breakdown of the various types of holiday insurance packages available which can then be tailored to specific needs and preferences.

Below we list a clear guide to some of the travel insurance cover available and what each one means:

Single Trip

Usually the policy of choice for holidaymakers embarking on their annual trip away, as the name suggests, this offers you travel insurance for one trip only. When this type of insurance is taken out, it is normal practice to specify your departure and return dates in order to be covered efficiently for the duration of that period.

Annual Travel Insurance

The policy of choice for travel enthusiasts who travel regularly throughout the year and are therefore highly likely to benefit from annual travel insurance. This policy generally covers an unlimited number of trips over the course of a year, providing each trip lasts for 90 days or less. Annual travel insurance can often be tailored with extras for each trip, such as cover for sports and expeditions that you might undertake.

Backpacker Insurance

Highly popular amongst those aged 18–25 who are embarking on a gap year abroad, backpack insurance differs slightly from annual travel insurance as this covers trips away for prolonged periods of time, usually between 31 days and 18 months. As backpackers are more likely to indulge in a range of activities during their time away, backpacker insurance usually covers a number of the most popular ventures including bungee jumping and mountain biking. Extras such as winter sports cover can also be added to create a more tailored travel insurance policy.

Winter sports cover

Obviously not one for the beach combers but made for those who enjoy escaping to the mountains for during the winter months. As many winter sports come with a risk factor, this means that they often require extra insurance to cover any unfortunate accidents. This is why the specialist winter sports cover was developed.

BlackBerry has been one of the most popular smart-phones for many years, before even the iPhone. If you are thinking about buying a BlackBerry yourself then you may be interested to know that there are actually several different types of BlackBerry phones. It is important that you take a look at all of them in order to ensure that you get the right phone for you personally.

Useful websites

BlackBerry Curve

The BlackBerry Curve is possibly one of the most well-known types of BlackBerry phones, and it is one of the originals too. Despite the fact that this is one of the older series of BlackBerry phones, it still proves to be incredibly popular. It features the iconic QWERTY keyboard which makes for very easy messaging. The BlackBerry Curve also features the track ball, which makes navigation especially easy. The track ball is one of BlackBerry’s most popular features. As with all BlackBerry phones you are able to use the BlackBerry Messenger service (BBM).

BlackBerry Bold

The BlackBerry Bold comes from the 9000 series, and is one of the newer models. There are several different handsets available in the Bold series, and all of them have some very noticeable improvements and enhancements in comparison with previous models such as the Curve. However, fans of the Curve will not be disappointed as the Bold still features the well-known, easy to use QWERTY keyboard. There is the option for either the track ball or the touch pad; some models in this range have one or the other, so the option is there for those who want it. This is probably one of the more affordable BlackBerry’s, and is one that is well worth looking at, even if it is only for its modern look and feel.

BlackBerry Storm

There are thousands of different touch screen phones available, and this is BlackBerry’s offering. Although it is not considered as good as some of the other types of BlackBerry phones, it does still have some major plus points. It has a very nice modern feel to it, which is something that a lot of people are looking for these days. However, it can actually be quite difficult to type emails on the BlackBerry Storm, especially in comparison with the BlackBerry’s that make use of the original QWERTY keyboard.

BlackBerry Pearl

The BlackBerry Pearl is a lot different to most of the other types of BlackBerry phones because of its design. With a candy bar shape you would not even know that this is a phone from BlackBerry unless you own one. Although this may not sound appealing, there are actually some really good points about this pone. For example, the QWERTY keyboard is compact whilst still being very easy to use. As well as this, it is much easier to carry around. However, if you are looking for a phone with that obvious BlackBerry appearance then the Pearl is probably not the phone for you.

Energy Saving Trust Recommended

You can check on the Energy Saving Trust website here to find a Energy Saving Trust Recommended Dishwasher. This should save you money and the environment at the same time. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that if all old dishwashers were replaced with recommended models, £47 million a year would be saved – and almost 200,000 tonnes of CO2.

Types of fitting

Integrated Dishwashers

These are dishwashers that are installed as part of a kitchen fitting rather than being standalone machine. The advantage of this is a seamless kitchen finish; but the disadvantage is that it is very difficult to relocate the dishwasher should you decide to move or re-design. Generally an integrated dishwasher will give you slightly more internal space and will produce less noise.

Freestanding Dishwashers

These are dishwashers that can be fitted anywhere there is a water supply so offer an obvious advantage over integrated models. They are generally less expensive than fitted machines.

Types of Dishwasher

Full size

A full size dishwasher is suitable if you have a large or busy household and regularly see dishes piled high up on every surface. They have a large capacity of up to 60, or so, larger items (Plates, bowls etc).

Slim

A slim dishwasher is ideal if you want to squeeze as much as possible into your kitchen, if you have a small space to work with or if you have a small household. They have a reduced capacity being able to take 20-30 larger items.

Compact

A compact dishwasher sits on a counter top or in a cupboard and is roughly the same size as a microwave. These are perfect for flats or bedsits as they don’t get in the way too much.

Dishwasher functions

Different dishwasher types will have different functions but most are available in some configuration on all the types of machine listed above.

Half load function

This function allows you to save water and electricity when you have not filled your dishwasher. It sets the machine to only use half the normal amount of water – whilst still providing an efficient wash.

Rinse only function

This function allows you to quick wash dishes without using too much water. It is great if you have been eating light foods and don’t have greasy pots and pans to wash.

Delicate only function

This function allows you to wash items lightly so that they don’t get damaged. It is useful for washing fine crystal glasses and patterned china that you don’t want to risk breaking.

Temperature control function

This function is useful for saving energy when you only want to wash lightly used plates and cutlery. Grease and other sticky cooking by-products need a high temperature to clean properly. Delicate patterns require a lighter temperature to prevent damage. Being able to adjust your temperature saves electricity and your fine china so is very useful.

Timer function

This function lets you set when you wish your dishes to be washed. This is great if you live in an area where you have the option to use off-peak energy at a reduced rate.

This covers the key features to look for in dishwasher types and will allow you to choose which models will be most beneficial for you.

Types of skips

This video from Honley Skip Hire gives a great over-view of the different types of skip size available.

Skips sizes do vary slightly from company to company, but generally you will find skip hire companies will have fairly standard size skip sizes.

One of the most common size skips seen in residential areas in the UK is probably the 8 cubic yard skip.

You can read more about the 8 cubic yard skip, as well as the 10, 6, 4 and 2 cubic yard size skips.

10 Cubic Yard – Maxi

The 10 cubic yard maxi skip is useful for large house clearance jobs, but remember you can’t put heavy waste like soil or rubble in it due to the weight.

8 Cubic Yard – Large Builder

The 8 cubic yard skip is probably the most commonly used skip size in the UK.

Good for house renovation jobs, and the largest skip available for heavy waste like soil, rubble and cement.

6 Cubic Yard – Small Builder

Second most popular multi-purpose skip.

Good for bulky waste, and you can all sorts of heavy materials into it.

4 Cubic Yard – Midi

Used mainly for kitchen and bathroom re-fits, and small household work.

2 Cubic Yard – Mini

Smallest skip generally available, used for very small garden and household jobs. Don’t get this if you think your job will produce large amounts or sizes or waste.

Useful Websites

Some useful websites to visit if you are thinking about getting a skip in the UK:
